Borax is a fine powdery preservative salt that is very useful for use in mounts in which the animal's own bones are used. Think of the skulls, wing and leg bones of birds in particular. Sprinkling the bird skull with Borax after cleaning preserves it and also keeps insects away for the first time.
Caution: harmful to the respiratory tract, do not inhale! Possibly harmful to foetuses.
