Preserving fluid (Formalin 4%) for preservation and storage of wet specimens
Preserving fluid (Formalin), a 4% diluted solution, perfect for making wet specimen taxidermy. Bottle 1 litre.
When preparing a wet specimen, note that the dosage must be 'built up'. For the best quality of the wet specimen, it is recommended to first make a 1% solution, inject the animal with this, a day later 2% and another day later 4%. After this, the animal can be kept in the 4% solution.
Because formalin has a hardening effect, injecting a diluted solution ensures that the water with the formalin penetrates deep into the tissue. If an animal is placed directly in too highly concentrated a solution, you run the risk that the outside will harden while the inside is not yet preserved. This often eventually manifests itself in the 'flocculation' of a specimen.
Advice: store specimens in preserving fluid in glass jars with appropriate seals. Plastic can react with the chemical liquid and cause leaks!
Warning: contains toxic substances, always wear waterproof gloves and eye/face protection! Apply in a well-ventilated area.
